Case Study: Refreshing an 866-Square-Foot Garage in Lake Placid, Florida
The Cotton project involved resurfacing an 866-square-foot garage in Lake Placid, Florida, where the existing concrete had developed minor scuffs, scratches, small cracks, and stains from everyday use. While the surface was not severely damaged, these imperfections had accumulated over time and were starting to make the garage look worn.
As part of the project, Tru-Grit prepared the existing concrete, addressed the small cracks and surface imperfections, and completed expansion joint cutting before installing the new flooring system. The goal was to give the garage a cleaner, more finished surface while addressing the existing conditions that could affect the appearance of the completed floor.
The Challenge: Everyday Wear Across the Garage Floor
Garage floors naturally take on wear from vehicles, foot traffic, storage, and everyday use. On the Cotton project, the 866-square-foot concrete floor showed signs of this regular use, including minor scuffs, scratches, small cracks, and stains.
None of these issues represented severe damage, but together they made the existing concrete look older and less uniform. The stains and surface marks were visible across the garage, while the small cracks added to the worn appearance of the floor.
The project also included expansion joint cutting, which required attention to the existing concrete layout before the new flooring system was installed. Addressing these details during preparation helped create a more complete installation rather than simply applying a new finish over the existing surface.
The Solution: Surface Preparation and Expansion Joint Cutting
Tru-Grit approached the Cotton garage by first preparing the existing concrete for the new flooring system. The minor cracks, scuffs, scratches, and stains were addressed as part of the preparation process, helping create a cleaner and more consistent surface for the finished floor.
Expansion joint cutting was also incorporated into the project. Rather than leaving the existing concrete joints as an overlooked detail, the joints were intentionally addressed as part of the installation. This helped define the finished surface and maintain the appropriate joint layout within the concrete.
Once the preparation and expansion joint work were completed, the new flooring system could be installed across the 866-square-foot garage. The combination of surface preparation and a new finished coating gave the space a more uniform appearance while covering the accumulated signs of everyday wear.
The Process: Preparing the Garage for a New Floor
The existing garage floor was first prepared for the new flooring system, with attention given to the minor cracks, scuffs, scratches, and stains throughout the 866-square-foot surface. Addressing these existing conditions helped create a cleaner and more consistent foundation for the new floor.
Expansion joint cutting was also completed as part of the preparation process, establishing clean, intentional joint lines within the concrete and incorporating the existing movement points into the overall installation.
Once the concrete was properly prepared, a Moisture Vapor Barrier was incorporated into the flooring system to help address potential moisture vapor coming through the slab. With the surface prepared, expansion joints addressed, and moisture protection in place, the new flooring system was installed across the garage.
The completed installation brought the different preparation steps together into a consistent finished surface, giving the garage a cleaner appearance while addressing the everyday wear and existing conditions of the original concrete.
Why Preparation Matters
Even when a concrete floor does not have major damage, years of everyday use can leave behind a collection of smaller imperfections. Scuffs, scratches, stains, and minor cracks can make an otherwise functional garage look worn and inconsistent.
Taking the time to address these conditions before installing a new floor helps create a more uniform finished surface. Expansion joints also deserve attention during the installation process because they are part of the existing concrete structure and should be incorporated into the finished flooring system rather than simply overlooked.
For the Cotton project, the preparation work was an important part of the overall transformation. The goal was not just to cover the existing concrete, but to address the details that were already present and prepare the garage for its new finished surface.
The Outcome: A Cleaner, More Finished Garage
The completed Cotton project refreshed 866 square feet of garage flooring in Lake Placid, Florida. Minor scuffs, scratches, stains, and small cracks were addressed during preparation, while expansion joint cutting was incorporated into the installation.
The result was a more consistent and finished-looking garage floor that moved away from the worn appearance of the original concrete. By combining detailed surface preparation with a new flooring system, the garage received a clean update suited to everyday use.
